The Sports Widow's Thanksgiving Scorecard

Well, Thanksgiving is over. I bade goodnight to my mother-in-law, as well as sister-in-law and her family, grabbed a late-night turkey & gravy snack, and here I am to give you a report on the day.
There are three more sports-dominated days ahead of me, but so far I haven't been knocked out. Here's why:
For the most part, the televised football and basketball games were relegated to the basement family room. I confess that I was not as hardline as I had hoped about the TV droning in the main floor social hub, but I tried.
Somehow I managed to wiggle out of taking the kids to shoot buckets and play on the nearby Alki School playground. My husband and brother-in-law took most of the troops there. Now, that was deft.
As hoped, I managed to watch part of the Hitchcock Fest on AMC, which included my all-time favorite movie, Rear Window, and my all-time most perplexing movie, The Birds. For the life of me, I still don't know what provoked an avian war against humanity in Bodega Bay, CA. But, for the first time, I noticed a Sports Widow Movie Moment in The Birds. The leading male character, Mitch Brenner, played by Rod Taylor, discusses a case in which the husband, a sports fan, killed his wife for changing the channel while he was watching a football game. This was 1963. Hmmm....
Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Please share your stories.

Thanksgiving greetings from the Chicago Sports Widows and me!
We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our traditional family thanksgiving…sports fans in the den and family room with TV's tuned to ESPN, ABC and Fox Sports 24/7….and sports widows in the kitchen, dining room and living room between meals and snacks.
Dinner was fantastic, turkey with all the trimmings, a small affair with 14 people. The only thing we didn’t have was my nephew’s famous White Castle Stuffing (made from burgers, buns, onions & dill pickles). We were all disappointed. We took off after dinner for dessert with the entire Beazley Clan (about 85 people, plus or minus a cousin). Lot’s of fun, food, drink and yes…more football.
We’ve taken a couple of breaks to go out for dinner (always picking a restaurant where we could be surrounded by big screen TV’s and a variety of basketball, football and/or hockey games). Last night we followed up dinner with a trip to Shawn’s Pub in Alsip, Illinois where we could watch #2 University of Kansas vs. #3 University of Missouri game featured on all the screens (my brother-in-law and his girlfriend are HUGE KU fans). We escaped before the end of the game (KU was losing) to head on back to the ranch.
Today is the Bears Game (vs. Denver), the Seattle/ St. Louis game and Sunday night football. Hope all Sports Widows survived the holiday…we have a lot to be thankful for.
Reclaim the recliner! Seize the remote! Happy Thanksgiving!

Dear Sports Widow,
I am a Sports Widow Maker (just ask my wife) and I had a marvelous Thanksgiving, thanks you very much. I got to watch the Packers win a big game, we stayed home for dinner and I got to watch the Packers win a big game.
As we go into the home stretch of the NFL regular season, I am hoping for some tips on staying married through the playoffs and into next year. I hear it’s the holiday season, and yeah, that’s important, especially with a family, but Brett Favre is 38 and won’t be playing much longer. After all, Santa comes every year. This may be the last time the Packers make the playoffs for decades! I gotta watch these games!
Suffice it to say my wife doesn’t understand my obsession. “When are you going to grow up?” pretty much captures her point of view.
The abbreviation for “Sports Widow Maker” is SWM, which, as you may know, also stands for “Single White Male” in personals columns. I’m beginning to think this is no coincidence.
Got any advice?
Thanks,
Keith
