How I Became a Sports Widow

The only math formula I ever memorized was: Tragedy+Time=Comedy. When I apply this to my relationship with sports, believe me, comedy is the operative word.

Here's a brief autobiography. I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where I suffered the anguish of being un-athletic and surrounded by Green Bay Packers fans, who didn't know how to admit a young girl to their club. Then, I married a sports fan, who wanted a pre-nuptial agreement to protect the sanctity of March Madness, the NCAA college basketball tournaments that are in full swing right now. Finally, I became a Mom, unwittingly spawning MORE sports fans with the birth of my three children.
ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN.com....enough already!

So, without any deliberate attempt to become marginalized by sports, I was sidelined. I stood on the widow's walk of sports obsession, wondering if I would ever get connected with this part of my huband's and my children's lives. I had no foothold. That's when I had The Idea, the antidote. I thought, I can't be the only one in this situation. So, I'm starting a company called Sports Widow Entertainment, LLC. Its mission is to entertain, enlighten and empower other Sports Widows, the disenfranchised spouses, partners and friends of sports fanatics. As the company evolves, I hope to create products and services for people who don't like, don't get or aren't good at sports. I've been working on a pilot radio show: Sports Widow Radio. I'll tell you more about this as time goes on.

But, first, I want to build a community, to connect with like-minded Sports Widows through this blog. Each week, I plan to share a short story about my crazy life as The Sports Widow. In turn, I hope you'll share your stories or observations, whether they're funny, sad, poignant, embarrassing, angry or frustrating. Bring it on. I want to connect with you. En route, we'll learn about each other's lives, too.

Now the question: Are you a bonified, all-around Sports Widow or do you consider yourself a specialist-- Baseball Widow, Basketball Widow, Football Widow, Golf Widow, Hockey Widow, Racing Widow, Soccer Widow or Tennis Widow? What's your story? What are your credentials as a Sports Widow?
