Challenges at the Putt Putt Golf Course

One of the joys of our Spring Break at Wapato Point in Lake Chelan, Washington, is the 19-station Putt Putt golf course. We play the course several times throughout the week, starting in the Kiosk where we make the tough choices about equipment: Which club is the right length? Which ball color best matches our outfits? that kind of thing. Then we all have to decide our strategies. For instance, my 12-year-old daughter Kit is a herder. She never waits for the ball to stop, but keeps it in constant motion until it tumbles into a hole. In contrast, 9-year-old Austin is quick and aggressive.

The Lake Chelan Putt Putt course was updated a couple of years ago in a classic Northwest style, with a lighthouse at the final station, which eats your ball. I was reminded that last year, at The Doghouse, I was trying to get a good, clean shot through the slot beneath the doghouse when I heard an indignant "HEYYYYY." Then I saw a flash of pink, which was Kit's hood as she popped up from behind The Doghouse. Unbeknownst to me, her ball was trapped in the slot and she was laying down, trying to fish it out with her golf club. I didn't injure her, but she was angry that I played through her game.

This year, I managed to make a couple of hole in ones, including ringing the bell at one hole: CLANGGGGGG. My fantasy is that Tiger Woods would play a round of Putt Putt with me and that Bill Murray would be assigned as my caddy.
