Spiraling Into Football Season

Today was one of those days when my best strategy is to divide and conquer between the boys and the girls in the family. It's my oldest daugther Kit's 14th birthday and we're having a casual party at Arbor Heights Swim & Tennis club, our community pool. And, ironically, because I, 10-year-old Austin and 8-year-old Caroline participated in a health & fitness pilot program that is sponsored by the Seattle Seahawks and the NFL with Virginia Mason Medical Center, I get all sorts of football-related opportunities, and one came our way this week.
This time, the Nutrition & Fitness for Life (NFL) program opportunity was an invitation for the kids to participate in a Punt, Pass & Kick competition prior to a Seattle Seahawks scrimmage, which I'm told is an intramural, meaning teammates playing other teammates. I asked Caroline if she wanted the honor of being one of three kids to run across the field and compete, but she declined vociferously - a possible sports widow in the making. Austin was very enthusiastic about it, so he and my sports fan husband, Bryan, headed off to Quest Field in the AM.
As I was preparing for Kit's party, I received a call from Austin announcing he got to run on the field, won the competition, AND got to meet Coach Mike Holmgren. When Caroline heard Austin won, her reply was "Duh." She thinks he's the golden boy and resents this on occasion. His reward: a $50 gift certificate to the Seattle Seahawks Team Store.

After this, the guys headed off to a VIP tent on Lake Washington for the annual Seafair hydroplane races. We went to the pool; gnawed on grapes, cheetos, chocolate buttermilk cake & assorted ice creams (all Kit's favorites); and I chatted with the partygoers' moms. Our famous chocolate buttermilk cake is in the entertaining section. It's always receives rave reviews.
At the end of the night, when we all reconvened, the television sports fare was inductees to the National Football League Hall of Fame. I watched a player called Art Monk give a touching speech, which incorporated his religious faith and faithfulness to his wife. It must be tough to sustain those. I'm sure there are a lot of temptations. He said it meant more than just the bust of himself and the gold jacket.
All of this talk about busts and gold jackets has inspired me to go to Macy's and pick some foundations and a cute, gold jacket for fall!
