Out With College Basketball and in With Baseball

This Monday night one of the defining annual features of my Sports Widowhood will have concluded: The NCAA College Basketball Tournament will end. This is my husband and sports fan Bryan's passion. What's different this year, however, is that we've already segued into baseball, which has slided into second-place prominence with the two major sports fans in my household, Bryan and my 10-year-old son Austin. As I blog, I am listening to announcer Dave Niehaus narrate the Seattle Mariners playing the Baltimore Orioles. Groan. Is there any mercy? Here are a few of my deep thoughts on this season which truly never ends.
Pneumonia Claims the Sports Widow and Saps Her Strength.
Last month, I was the victim of a conspiracy. At the end of February, I was hospitalized for a week with pneumonia, which meant that I spent the entire month of March recovering and lacked the energy to protest this year's basketball obsession. Televised basketball wreaked havoc on my household and I couldn't even wave a white surrender handkerchief.
On the Positive Side
The television wasn't ever temporarily relocated to our bedroom, which can be one of my greatest annoyances as a Sports Widow. I have a hard time going to sleep and waking up with the guys from Sports Center.
Go Tarheels!
Since I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina and my claim-to-fame is that I took a Jazz Appreciation class with Michael Jordan and teammates such as Sam Perkins and James Worthy, I'm marginally happy to see that the Tarheels are still in contention. Anything that personalizes the experience is a bonus.
Family Sports Update
Austin finished playing Cub Basketball in March and has now begun Little League Minors. My 8-year-old daughter Caroline will start YMCA Baseball this month (her second year), so I'll share updates regarding her progress. So far Caroline appears to have more natural coordination than her mother, which is certainly a bonus. I don't like to write scripts for anyone, but I fear my 13-year-old daughter my have my athletic curse. Fortunately, she prefers a book to sports, but this could change, right???
That's the latest from Sports Widow Land, where televised sports are a constant and youth sports are a certainty.
