Phew! Sports Obsession Took a Backseat Today

The thing that astonishes me about sports is just how much of an impact it has on my day-to-day life, especially televised sports and sports radio, but today offered a welcome respite. Aside from the Mariners game being broadcast on the car radio as we travelled to our neighborhood pool for a dinner BBQ and hearing the announcement on television that Brett Favre is returning to football, sports just played a cameo role today. How merciful is that?

Among his many attributes, my husband Bryan, the sports fan, is an excellent cook and grillmeister, so he prepared a fabulous grilled salmon with pesto for dinner at our family birthday celebration for our daughter Kit, who is now 14.

One of our guests was my mother-in-law, a 77-year-old Louisiana transplant. She is definitely a sports widow, but she astonished Bryan with her sudden knowledge of baseball scores. Apparently one of her new buddies in the retirement home is a baseball fan, and she's started watching some of the games! Uh oh, we could have a sports convert here...

When, if ever, does sports obsession go on a holiday for you?
