Fortunately, Boogie Boarding is Not an Olympic Event

While Michael Phelps is busy breaking Olympic records in swimming, including Mark Spitz's record, some of us are on a far more elementary, pedestrian, if not amoebic level. This morning, inspired by the wonder of The Beijing Olympics, I decided to try something new: boogie boarding. It's not an Olympic event, but it may as well have been for me.
For the past two days, my family has continued its East Coast adventure at a new stop on the itinerary, Virginia Beach. My sports fan husband Bryan, and kids Kit, 14; Austin, 10; and Caroline, 8, are staying in my oldest brother's condo with his family. This is the first time our kids have experienced the Atlantic Ocean. We're far more accustomed to the frigid waters of the Northwest.Anyway, we've been body surfing and the kids made boogie boarding look so easy that I boldly grabbed my niece's board with the cavorting dolphin on it and headed out for the surf with Austin. I caught wave 1, and I caught wave 2 at which point I broke the board, bent it right in the lower half, which was covered with decorative blue waves. DAAAANNNNGGGG! I'm beached, all washed up.So, it looks like I'll be shopping for a new board.Have you had any athletic disasters of an Olympic proportion lately?
